場や人に合わせて、一つ一つ意匠がつむぎ出される京菓子。京菓子のテーマや情景を小さな世界に作り上げる際には、和歌などの古典文学が、大きな役割を果たしてきました。
本年は、平安時代中期に紫式部によって書かれた長編小説である『源氏物語』をとりあげます。
『源氏物語』は、後世に多大な影響を与えてきました。とりわけ、有斐斎弘道館が設立された江戸時代には、『源氏物語』をパロディにした物語が多種出版されるなど、広く親しまれていたことがわかります。教養の基として、また想像力の源として、今なお人々のあいだに生き続けています。
なお、2018年にも源氏物語をテーマに公募をいたしました。再度のテーマ設定となりますが、古典を深く読み、また楽しんでいただくきっかけになればと願っています。
募集要綱は、3月に発表予定です。
京菓子展とは――
「京菓子」は、朝廷文化である有職や茶道文化と密接に関わり発展した世界でも稀にみる芸術的な食べ物です。日本の伝統文化を表す重要なエッセンスが、すべて《50グラムの立体造形》に込められています。
本展覧会は、京都を代表する芸術文化である京菓子を通して、広く皆様に古典文学について知っていただくとともに、京菓子についての理解を深めていただくことを趣旨とするものです。
本年は源氏物語をテーマにした京菓子作品の中から、選りすぐりの作品を展示いたします。

Kyogashi is carefully crafted with unique designs which corresponds with different places, occasions and people. Classical literature along with waka poetry has played a significant role in creating themes and visual aspects for these small works of art.
This year, we will be presenting “The Tale of Genji,” a long novel written by Murasaki Shikibu in the mid-Heian period.
“The Tale of Genji” has had a significant impact over the years, especially during the Edo period when various stories parodying it were widely published. It continues to live among people as a foundation of culture and a source of imagination.
In 2018, we had a exhibition under the theme of “The Tale of Genji,” and we hope to provide another opportunity for deep exploration and enjoyment of Japanese classics through this year’s theme announcement.
The exhibition guidelines will be announced in March.
◆About the Kyogashi Exhibition:
“Kyogashi” is a type of artistic confection that originated in the culture of the imperial court and took shape through the tea ceremony culture. These small sculptures weighing only 50 grams crystallize the craftsmanship that is essential to Japanese traditional culture.
This exhibition aims to promote understanding of classical literature through Kyogashi, representing the artistic culture of Kyoto, and also deepen understanding for these confections.
This year, selected works under the theme of “The Tale of Genji” will be displayed in the Kyogashi Exhibition.
