A fresh new taste of Rimpa

With their roots stretching back to the rich culture of the Japanese imperial court and traditional tea ceremony, kyogashi (lit. Kyoto sweets) are a truly unique food, not to be found anywhere else. Each sweet, carefully created by a master craftsman, is filled with the essence of Japanese culture.
The objective of this exhibition is to learn about Rimpa through the lens of sweets, while deepening the understanding of kyogashi.
Commemorating this year's 400th anniversary of Rimpa, we have organized a public contest and received a great number of designs. We are now exhibiting the winning works.
It will be an exciting moment of seeing Rimpa through a contemporary point of view, while witnessing the birth of new kyogashi.

Come experience a whole new world of kyogashi!

■ We are displaying about 30 sweets with the theme “Nature as portrayed by Rimpa.” You can actually taste some of the chosen sweets together with matcha tea. (1000 Yen, limited supply, available at the main venue only.)

■ There will be kyogashi artisans explaining about the works at the exhibition. (Available at the main venue, 1:30 – 3:30 PM, no reservation required.)
Demonstration and talk event “Kyogashi Debate” will be held on November 2 and 4. We will explore the specific features of kyogashi through the lens of Rimpa. (Main venue, 11:00 – 12:00. Lecturer: Sugiyama Sayoko. Japanese only.) Limited to 10 participants, 3000 Yen when booked in advance, 3500 Yen on the same day.

The historical Kodokan was a place of scholarship founded in 1806 by an important Edo-period Confucianist Minagawa Kien. He is said to have had some 3000 disciples.
Located on the former site of Kien's school, the present-day Kodokan was started by a group of scholars and business people in hope to revive the former establishment. We are now striving to preserve cultural heritage, while studying the beauty and spirit of traditional arts and culture such as kyogashi or tea ceremony. Kodokan has become a place where people from various background can gather to study and enjoy cultural activities.
